CORRELOPHUS CILIATUS

Crested Gecko

HOUSING

  • Baby crested geckos under 10 grams can be kept in a large Kritter Keeper.

  • Juvenile geckos 11-35g can be kept in 12x12x18 enclosures.

  • Adults 36g and larger can be housed in an 18x18x24 enclosure.

  • Glass, acrylic or PVC is preferred, as it holds humidity better than a screen enclosure.

TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY

  • Crested geckos thrive at temperatures between 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 Celsius) and 80ºF (27C), but can tolerate nighttime drops to 65F (18C) and daytime highs of 84F (29C). These extremes can cause health issues if left too long (especially heat), so they are best avoided. Temperatures of 78-80 (26-27C) are best for young geckos in order to stimulate appetites.

  • Extreme heat is dangerous, and easily lethal, to these geckos.

  • A small water dish should be provided at all times.

  • Daytime humidity should stay between 50-60%. Nighttime humidity should spike to 80-90%. A manual mister or misting system can be used to achieve this.

  • Constant elevated humidity is just as dangerous as constantly low humidity, so while it is important to mist, it is just as important to not over-mist.

FOOD

  • Powdered complete diets are readily available for crested geckos. These diets should always be mixed with water. Suggested diets include Pangea and Repashy.

  • Crested geckos can benefit from live insect feeders, such as crickets or dubia roaches, twice a week, especially as babies. All insect feeders (with the exception of BSFL) should be dusted with calcium with D3.

COMMON ILLNESSES

  • Floppy Tail Syndrome. The muscles in the base of the tail become weakened due to upside-down sleeping positions on glass.

  • Metabolic Bone Disease. The bones become weakened due to the body beginning to take calcium from the bones in order to make up for a lack of calcium.

  • Parasites. Can be obtained from a variety of sources, including other reptiles or some insect feeders.
